Principal's Message

Lake Pontchartrain Elementary SOARING TO SUCCESS… AS ONE!

Greetings Scholars, Families, and Friends!

I am blessed and elated to welcome you to Lake Pontchartrain Elementary (LPE) for the 2021-2022 academic year.  Lake Pontchartrain is a nurturing, compassionate teaching and learning community where student achievement is our top priority.  Administration, teachers, and faculty have high expectations for students (scholars); we believe in all students and their potential to compete in the technologically-advanced global society.  We invite parents, guardians, and stakeholders to partner with LPE in providing “THE BEST” academic experience for all scholars.  One way to partner with Lake Pontchartrain Elementary is to join the PTA/PTO by supporting the organized outreach projects.  In addition, home-to-school partnership is the most impactful factor in the success of scholars.  At Lake Pontchartrain Elementary, we understand the importance of maintaining a productive partnership through open and honest communication, positive and proactive involvement with students, parents, teachers, and staff.

We are thrilled to embark on this mission with scholars from PreK - 8 to discover, build, remediate, and extend their understanding and knowledge academically, socially, and emotionally.  Our scholars will become better problem solvers, critical thinkers, and innovative creators while receiving high quality instruction with Tier 1 curriculum and supplemental resources.  Our school’s goal is to provide a differentiated approach to meet the needs of all learners resulting in academic progress.  Our instructional focus includes targeted intervention, core supports, standards-aligned instruction, and student engagement.  The integration of effective instructional practices during teaching and learning will provide a robust classroom environment for the acquisition and retention of knowledge by scholars at LPE.

We know every child’s school year is filled with hopes and dreams of future aspirations.  At the same time, I must convey the importance of reading and mathematics to the achievement of future goals.  I want to implore parents, guardians, tutors, or siblings to support our scholars by reviewing for quizzes/tests, extra practice for mastery, listening to students read, or asking “What did you learn today?”.  Grades 3-8 will set achievement goals for this school year using spring 2021 LEAP2025 and diagnostic data.  This will allow scholars to set goals, monitor and track their progress in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies, and adjust for goal attainment.  This process empowers scholars to take ownership of their learning and decision-making for improving academic outcomes.

As a new member of the LPE family, I want to share a little about myself!  I was born in New Orleans and raised in Jefferson Parish.  I have been married for 19 years with three children.  I currently reside with my husband and two daughters in St. Charles Parish.  I earned my A.A. in Early Childhood Education, a B.A. degree in Elementary Education, a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, and in May 2021, I obtained a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.  I have worked for 22 years as an educator, numeracy coach, and assistant principal in three Louisiana public school districts.  I love this profession!  This work brings me joy because it challenges students every day to think critically, while becoming productive citizens.

Working together, we can help our students; school, district, and community SOAR TO SUCCESS… AS ONE!

Respectfully yours,

Dr. Kara Washington Lawson, Principal
